PIO X HIGH SCHOOL

BACKGROUND.

PIO X School is a catholic scholastic Institute located in Via Cavour, Treviso, not far from Porta SS. Quaranta, in the so called "Cittą - Giardino". It was founded by the Diocese in 1920, at bishop Monsignor Giacinto Longin's bequest, its aim to offer a suitable cultural education to skilful and deserving youth in view of qualified Christian presence in the society.

An Episcopal School had already existed in Treviso since 1841, linked to the diocese seminary, as the memorial tablet at the entrance of the present seminary in St. Nicholas Square still attests. However, Pope Pio X thought it right to divide the education of the future priests from that of the other students and decided to close the boarding school in 1906 where he himself had lived, thirty years before bishop Longhin thought it urgent to give a new school to the town. After the Great War, on December 4th, 1919, it was decided to construct the building which the Bishop wanted named after his great fellow-citizen Pope Pio X.

The building, designed by the engineers A. Passi and G. Sbrissa Fioretti, already welcomed 340 students in 1926, of whom 220 received board and lodging. After the Second World War, besides the necessary restorations, important works of completion were made; according to Architect L.Candiani's plan, the theatre (with the capacity of 430 seats), the Church frescoed by professor G.Barbisan from Treviso and the library were built.

Since 1970 the closing of the boarding school was underway, (from more than 300 interns in the first decades it was down to 70), and due to pressing request by the students' families, the school was opened to girls.

THE SCHOOL TODAY.

In the present year the Pio X School is attended by 742 students enrolled in 31 classes. It is not a boarding School and the students come mostly from townships throughout the Treviso Province.

Leader of the school is the principal, appointed by the Bishop, who presides over the Administration Board made up of a parish priest, a business consultant, a labor consultant, the chief accountant and a teacher.

As far as the school is concerned the principal works together with other diocese priests who serve as headmasters, with 64 priests and lay teachers, 4 clerks in the Secretariat and Administration and 11 workers with janitor, cleaning and maintenance duties.

Pio X School, besides its main scholastic activities, gives hospitality and promotes numerous cultural, sporting and association events, providing premises, equipment and installations.
